Lab-created birthstones can bring beauty to your jewelry wardrobe.
Lab-created birthstones can become a treasured part of your jewelry wardrobe or gift giving repertoire. I have always been prejudiced towards natural and genuine birthstones. However, after understanding more bout how lab-created birthstones are made – I am full of admiration!
I now believe that you can have as beautiful lab-created birthstone jewelry as natural, and that there are advantages to going to the lab.
Understand the difference between
- lab-created and
- simulated birthstones.
Natural birthstones are as you would imagine. Natural birthstones come from the mines!
After this it can become a bit confusing.
However, even some natural birthstones will be treated in the lab to create certain effects. Therefore, natural treated gems can still be called “genuine birthstones”.
Lab-created birthstones are not found in the ground – but they are not artificial. Generally lab-created are also called “synthetic, man-made, or artificial.”
There are several treatments to make lab-created birthstones:
- Heat: the most common treatment is sometimes gemstones are treated to the point of almost melting, and inclusions will disappear. Lab-created ruby and sapphire are often created this way.
- Genuine birthstones could go through pressure treatment
- Irradiation or a multitude of other processes to make them more beautiful.
December birthstone tanzanite in its natural state is often a brownish color. However, when heat treated, tanzanite becomes the beautiful blue-purple gemstone that we admire.
Simulated birthstones may be created out of glass. They may also be created by other substances. The most common cubic zirconium to make diamonds. Simulated and imitations of jewelry are usually made of plastics, glass, resin and dyes, these substances are used to imitate the color, shape or look of a natural gemstone.
There are some other lovely imitations of natural birthstones. I have learned that there is gorgeous Swarovski crystal birthstone jewelry.
If you are a jeweler, it is easy to identify these pieces, within a laboratory by a qualified gemologist. Some will try to pass off simulated birthstones as synthetic or lab-created. It is not immoral to chose a synthetic birthstone and the jewelry can be very pretty. But you want to know what you are getting.
Lab-Created Birthstone Bracelets
I love getting and giving bracelets. Here are some lovely lab-created birthstone bracelets, in some of the precious jewels. It is easier to fit a bracelet than a ring. Especially if your birthstone is ruby or sapphire, you might really enjoy these. I think they are romantic, perfect for Valentine’s Day or to give to your sweetheart.

Advantages of lab created birthstones
As you can imagine, the biggest problem is in the marketing of these gemstones. Yet, they actually are identical to natural jewels in chemical and mineralogical make-up. It is just that lab-created birthstones they are created in human laboratories rather than nature’s labs!
A lab-created diamond will be created out of the same material as a natural diamond, chemically it will be identical. Ironically, lab-created jewels are usually much more pristine than natural gems, they do not show the errors and flaws that natural gems do. Some lab-created jewels will have nearly perfect presentations.
Some of the advantages of lab-created and simulated birthstones:
- Simulated and lab-created birthstones are produced without any of the destructive mining practices that are often used
- Lab – created diamonds will definitely be “conflict-free” – no blood diamonds here!
- Simulated and lab-created birthstones come in wider variety of colors
- Lab created jewels will be practically flawless.
